Tucana, officially the Tucani Empire (Grusi: Imperio Tucani, Ursan: Tukanskaya Imperiya) is a nation in Centaura.
History

Throughout their service, the Centimado would foster a poor reputation within colonial Centauri and Tucana, colloquially known as the Nortes, being used to suppress its unruly population. The situation would deteriorate when King Edjardo ascended the throne in 985 and began openly prosecuting the Nortes locals. His attitude against the pieles pálidas (pale skins) was fueled by the death of his father, Agustin, that was blamed on his non-Grusan servants. Over Edjaro's tenure, the Centimado's jurisdiction and presence in the Nortes would increase before effectively replacing the locally recruited Guardia in law enforcement and even administration.
At the height of tensions in 1184, the Centimado affirmed suspicions of a potential uprising to King Ramon Flamenco, and the Royal army was deployed to aid them. Upon their arrival, a group named the Severnoye Bratstvo, or the Northern Brotherhood, declared the region's secession from the Grusan Empire, engaging the Centimado and Royal army in skirmishes weeks later. The 15-yearlong Norte Sangriento would see the Centimado serve as the army's rearguard and intelligence organization before an independent one was form in its midst. The Centimado conducted counterinsurgency and espionage operations throughout the conflict before mounting losses and expenses became too costly for House Flamenco.
King Tiburcio II began his reign by withdrawing the Centimado in 1197, returning the organization to its special police duties in the mainland. By 1200, the king had brokered the end of the war and the Nortes were granted complete independence, a decision that led to an abortive coup attempt later that year, only prevented by the actions of the Centimado. The organization would fight its final war during the 1655 succession crisis under Count Fernan of Castellarano against the makeshift army of House Verde, a cadet branch of the Flamencos that contested his ascension.
The nation of Tucana is an ally of Riaa and Centauri. The lands to the north are filled with taiga forests and heavy snow, so most of the population resides near the Tucana-Centauri border.
Riaan Civil War
During the Riaan Civil War, Tucana provided military aid to the Nationalists side of the Riaans, allowing the combined Nationalist-Tucani force to kick the Imperialists off mainland Riaa, helping to establish the Riaan Republic.
In the 1920s during the Centauran Wars, Tucana joined forces with Centauri, Riaa, and Columba to form the Northern Centauran Alliance in order to defeat the advancing Antarean armies.
Tucanese Campaign
In 1938, following Antares' acceptance of Ursa's request for a military alliance, Ursa would attack Tucana, with landings all across Tucana and northwest Riaa. Ursan forces were quickly able to make advances throughout much of the lesser defended Riaan north. The industrial and urban lands of Tucana were a tougher gambit, however, and forced a more meticulous campaign. Even so, Tucana eventually fell to the Ursans, even with Riaan military aid.
In the aftermath of the war, Ursa relinquished dominion of Tucana over to Antares, under the Skorpii Riaa system. In return, many Tucani factories and industry were repurposed to build Ursa's own fleets and military in the years leading up to the Forman War. Ursa kept the Tucani islands they conquered as well.
Languages
Tucana's languages are Ursan and Grusi. Grusi is more common in the southern regions due to influences by the recent Grusan Empire, while Ursan is presumably more popular in the northern regions due to contact with nearby Riaa and previous influences by the ancient Rodinese Mandate, the predecessor of Ursa. AbsoluteDuck has said that Ursan is more popular in Tucana than Grusi.[1]
