Blackton (formerly known as Boomtown) is a Domination map in Centaura. It is the first map of the Southern Corvus War.

Lore

Several decades prior, in the 1880s, Cetus forcefully seized South Corvus, a region renowned for its iron and coal deposits. Over the next twenty years, the Corvuns, heavily reliant on coal for their industries, experienced a gradual economic decline, with numerous urban centers in Corvus descending into poverty and rampant crime.

In 1908, the Corvun Army invaded from the north, fueled by revenge for its stolen lands. The Southern Corvus War begins. Blackton is a boomtown located near the northern border, home to businessmen and the families of coal miners. The town's populace received no warning of the Corvun invasion, resulting in many civilians being caught in the crossfire. Nevertheless, the majority managed to evacuate their homes and flee southward.

This is a three-point Domination map, with all points centered in between the Cetan and Corvun spawns, as each spawn is at the opposite end of the map. The first team to drain the enemy's 1200 points wins. Points can be drained from the enemy by capturing objectives (which are also referred to as points). Each side's spawn has spawn protection, in the form of invulnerable AI Machine Gunners for the Cetans, and Armored Cars for the Corvuns (similar to Ascendēns Forest, with boosted accuracy).

Combat

The gunplay on this map is close-quarters, with multiple buildings and alleyways around points A and B able to maneuvered through. These buildings, roads, and alleys provide decent cover in the event of a shootout. They are littered with trucks, wagons, sandbags, minecarts and debris which can provide cover. Maneuverability is restricted in some areas by barbed wire. For point C, mine shafts give both teams direct access to C from their respective spawns. Additionally, C may be accessed via mine shafts connecting minecarts to Blackton's rail yard, or through the Blackton Coal Mine building. The coal mine building and adjoining mine shafts can be extremely difficult to fight through, with low visibility, tight spaces, and fatal funnels littered throughout the building and mine shafts.

In place of artillery, an AI Corvun mortar with continually shell Points A and B and the surrounding areas. TNT barrels are also present in this map, able to be detonated by the AI mortar or the player, creating an explosion which kills any players in the immediate radius.

Points

  • Point A: Point A is in front of the Blackton Imperial Theatre and train station, with a number of horse wagons providing cover for players spawning around the statue. This point is near the rail yard, which can be used to maneuver and flank Point A without fighting through Blackton's city streets.
  • Point B: Point B is the second block down Blackton's main street, with less cover than point A, only a number of hastily placed sandbags, wagons, crates and buildings provide cover. Point B is difficult to defend, as many different routes can be taken to attack it, and defenders spawn in the open. Each route to attack Point B is generally very tight, funneling players into chokepoints.
  • Point C: Point C is in the center of the Blackton Coal Mine, on the pit's floor. It is situated at the center of the pit's minecart network and is only accessible via tunnels. Two of these tunnels connect to mouths leading to the rail yard, while two others allow for flanking from above through the attached colliery near B.

Trivia

  • All Assault classes are issued with a Double Barrel Shotgun on this map, as submachine guns were not invented at the time of the battle (1908).
  • The remastered version of this map curiously bears a resemblance to Blackwater and Annesburg from Red Dead Redemption.
  • This map features an extensive characterization of Michael Forrest, a Cetan Navy veteran who served on the CIS Kaitos before founding a veteran's saloon in Blackton. He is present on the map, mourning the recent death of his wife near Cetus' spawn.
  • This is the first map to feature an AI version of a playable class, as the mortar bombardment on this map is controlled by AI.
    • It also cannot be disabled in private servers using the :toggleartillery command.
  • This is the only map to feature explosive barrels.
  • Prior to the revamp, this map was notorious for spawncamping, along with Coastal Battery Q. After the remaster, this problem has been fixed.
  • This map features a number of static corpses of both civilians and soldiers on both sides.
  • This map features a number of horse-drawn wagons, with the only mechanized vehicles present being Cetan Imperial Army trucks and Corvun Armored Cars.
  • Before it was replaced in V3.6.2, the original version of Blackton was one of the first maps added to Centaura, being much more condensed, featuring no sporadic mortar bombardment mechanic, the Corvun spawn having AI machine gun spawn protection (like the Cetan spawn) instead of armored cars and being able to reach the buildings' rooftops.
